Well, I hope you all took advantage of the
brilliant moon-meets-winter solstice convergence last night. We were blessed
with a wonderfully clear night in San Francisco - no fog or anything -
and really warm sea breezes. Even at ten at night it was nudging sixty.
We drove across the Golden Gate Bridge (which is a monumental structure
when you get up close and personal) into Marin Country to observe the
lunar sights. At the top of the headlands, bathed in the moon's glow (it
was eerie, the landscape looked like, well, the moon surface) we had the
GG Bridge on one side with San Fran as the backdrop and then the Pacific
Ocean on the other. A truly breathtaking sight. Quite a lot of people
had made the trip up from the city to this vantage point. Yet even though
there were a fair few moon watchers there, it was nice and peaceful -
I think everyone was more or less stunned into silence, just soaking up
the atmosphere. After the damp squib that was the eclipse, this more than
made up for it. And driving back through the headlands in the inky blackness
we had some chilled drum & bass on the stereo which kind of complemented
the mood...(in fact, the Marin headlands were where the first mountain
bikes were invented in the Sixties...)
Aside from all that, it's been the usual Christmas nonsense, running around buying Xmas presents, finalising plans for NYE and buying ingredients for an apple crumble I'm going to cook on Christmas Day. To be quite honest, people don't seem to take Christmas very seriously over here, certainly not as much as Thanksgiving which is the big annual family get-together. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that San Francisco is a bit of a pagan city or maybe it's cos it's so warm but there's very little festive cheer - hardly any Xmas lights up in homes or shops. A few good films have opened here which should be hitting British shores soon. There's "American Beauty" with Kevin Spacey, a brilliant exploration of the darkside of the American dream; "Flawless" with Robert De Niro who plays a stroke-afflicted cop and mumbles through most of the film which is dominated by an enesemble performance by a bunch of drag queens: and "Being John Malkovitch", a psychotic black comedy about some people who find a portal into JM's mind...All three are highly recommended. Anyhow, this is a brief one. You'll also find attached a few images from clubs visited past and present - enjoy. Namaste, Kieran |
